How to manage content internationalization

Homer enables content internationalization, allowing your story to be accessible in multiple languages. You can manage these languages from the Languages Panel, which is found in the primary Project menu.

From this panel, you can:

Add a new language

To add a new language insert the two-digit ISO code for the language you want to insert in the input at the top right of the panel and select the language; click on the “New Language” button.

Change the main language

To change the main language, select the checkbox of your desired language. The project will then be refactored to make that language the primary one.

The Homer main editor is fully functional only for the main language. If you switch to another language, only the translation feature will be available.

Switch languages

In the Homer main editor click on the language box on the top bar and choose the language you want to edit.

The system will change to the chosen language. Any nodes that can be translated will be highlighted. If these nodes are left untranslated, text from the primary language will be displayed in gray as a reference. All other interactions with nodes, except for translation, will be disabled.

Translatable nodes

By default, Text nodes and Choice nodes are translatable because they often contain text that requires translation. However, you can designate any node as translatable from the node menu when in the main language.

A small red triangle will appear in its bottom left corner if a node isn't translatable.

You can use Google Translate to translate the node content directly from Homer.

Select the node text you want to translate, right-click, and choose “translate with Google in …” from the contextual menu.

Export strings for translators

Easily export all the text from your project’s nodes into a CSV file for translators to work their magic. Once they’re done, import them back into Homer to seamlessly fill in the content for each language in your project!

To export your content go to the Languages panel and click on the red button for the language you want to export (each language is on a separate file).
